Positioned within Cemagi’s picturesque rice paddies, Rumah Semilir transcends typical villa functionality as a special home designed to connect with nature. The name derives from Indonesian—“Rumah” (house) and “Semilir” (breeze)—reflecting its serene environment.
Inspired by the Landscape
The architectural approach capitalizes on natural surroundings, utilizing ironwood exterior materials that visually echo tall rice vegetation. The material’s chromatic evolution—shifting from reddish-brown to grey—provides contemporary aesthetics while maintaining warmth.

Working with the Land’s Natural Shape
Rather than excavation, designers embraced the site’s natural 2-meter elevation differential. A strategically positioned swimming pool occupies the lower tier, serving as the compositional focal point while minimizing earthwork requirements.
A Thoughtful Layout
The L-shaped configuration orients all spaces toward the pool area. The open-plan arrangement unifies dining, living, and kitchen functions, permitting natural illumination and airflow.

Using Local Materials for a Natural Feel
Material selection prioritizes regional resources, supporting local economies while establishing environmental harmony. Warm-toned wood and natural stone selections echo Balinese aesthetics, creating timeless contemporary-traditional synthesis.
